What is a Periodontist?
A periodontist, such as Dr. Lareau, is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum (periodontal) diseases, reconstructive therapies to restore lost bone and gum tissue support, managing contributing bite problems and with the replacement of missing teeth with of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. Training to become a periodontists includes a graduate educational program of three additional years of beyond dental school. In practice, ongoing continuing education is essential to remain familiar and well trained in developing techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal diseases, managing bite problems, reconstructive and cosmetic periodontal procedures.
Many patients’ periodontal needs can be managed appropriately in their general dentist’s practice. For patient’s that either do not respond to therapy or have more complex problems, a partnership between their general dentist and a periodontist, such as Dr. Lareau, can more effectively achieve the desired results.

While originally from Sioux Falls, SD, Katie came to the Twin Cities for college and completed her undergraduate studies in Biochemistry and Spanish at the University of St. Thomas. From there, she moved to Iowa City, where she received both her dental degree as well as her post- doctoral degree in periodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. While in her residency, Katie also completed a Master’s degree with her research project investigating the possible link between obesity and peri-implantitis. Read More…
